A little about me...

I'm passionate about helping people translate the knowledge of psychological science into practical, actionable strategies for impact, self-improvement and optimal performance.

Transitioning from business to education in my 20’s, I learned tremendously from the crucible of four years in a middle school classroom.  I came to appreciate both the power and the limits of the classroom as a vehicle for effecting learning, change and transformation.  I also found myself drawn to the excitement of facilitating change in others.  This was the beginning my journey from education to psychology to leadership development.

Since 1998, I have embraced the study of leadership, integrating it with over 30 years of experience as a clinical psychologist.  I have had the satisfaction of contributing to the personal development of hundreds of leaders from project manager to CEO, through coaching, facilitation and assessment. Adapting the techniques of clinical psychology to the practice of coaching has enabled me to develop individualized and impactful coaching techniques. I have developed expertise in the use of a broad variety of individual, organizational and 360-degree assessment instruments and in the integration of assessment results with individually tailored development plans.  In the classroom, I apply the principles of accelerated learning to create stimulating and enriching adult learning experiences for current and aspiring leaders.

I am a lecturer in the Naval Senior Leader Seminar, a program of the Center for Executive Education of the Naval Postgraduate School, Monterey, California.  With Caroline Turner, author of Difference Works, I co-facilitate workshops on gender differences and diversity.    I am the former chair of the year-long Leadership Ascent for Men, an award-winning program of The AthenA Group and The Leadership Investment (formerly The Women's Vision Foundation) and spent 20 years as an adjunct faculty member of the Center for Creative Leadership. In addition to my active engagement in leadership training and executive coaching, I continue to maintain a clinical psychology practice.

Living a balanced life is a high priority for me.  My wife of over thirty-five years and my three millennial sons are the major focus of my non-professional time.  I enjoy travel, domestic and international, especially with family.  A recreational runner for over forty-five years, I occasionally make the time to run a few miles and listen to a good audio book.
